Serves: 4 | Total Time: 15 minutes till itβs done
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. (If you have a cast-iron skillet, now is a great time to put it to use.)
- Split the dogs from top to bottom so that they open like a book. Donβt cut all the way through.
- Place the cut side of the hot dog down into the melted butter. Cook until the dog is crisp and browned on one side. Use tongs to turn the dogs and cook them on the flip side. This will take about 4 minutes. Take the dogs from the pan to a platter. Place the buns, cut side down, into the pan to toast the insides. This will take just a minute or two. Place the dogs in the buns and add your condiments.
Mustard, ketchup, and relish are obvious dog toppers. But how about chopped onions, sauerkraut, and diced jalapeΓ±os? I love a chili dog topped with chili, grated cheddar, and a dollop of sour cream. Feeling inspired? Try topping your dog with fresh avocado and diced tomato. SautΓ© some onions and peppers and pile those onto your dog. Deli-style dogs are topped with coleslaw and puckery dill pickles. Then thereβs my version of a Southern dawg topped with French fries, onion rings, and a splash of barbecue sauce. (Donβt judge!) Or how about a French-inspired dog? Toast a baguette and fill it with a foot-long dog. Then top with GruyΓ¨re cheese and place under the broiler to let the cheese melt. Yummmmm!

There is something profoundly joyful and nostalgic about a hot dog bar. Itβs an invitation to play, to customize, and to embrace the beautifully messy side of eating together. When you take a humble ingredient and elevate itβbutterflying the sausage for maximum crispness and offering an abundance of creative toppingsβyou tell your guests that casual food still deserves deep care. This relaxed, interactive style of dining strips away all pretension, encouraging easy conversation, shared laughter, and a true sense of community around the table.
Neighborly Grace
- THE PRESENTATION: Set up a sprawling, colorful hot dog bar. Arrange the butter-crisped hot dogs in their toasted buns on a large wooden board. Surround the board with small, elegant ceramic bowls filled with an array of toppings: warm chili, shredded cheddar, diced onions, pickled jalapeΓ±os, fresh avocado, and tangy coleslaw. Let guests build their own perfect dog.
- THE POUR: An icy, refreshing American lager or a crisp, dry hard cider. You want something highly carbonated and deeply thirst-quenching to reset the palate between bites of the rich, buttery sausage and the heavy, flavorful toppings.
- THE VIBE: Nostalgic, wildly fun, and warmly communal. This is the absolute best way to feed a crowd on a lazy Saturday afternoon in the backyard, where the only goal is pure comfort and effortless entertaining.
