Sugared Bacon-Wrapped Lil' Dogs
You donβt always have to eat a big dog in a bunβone of my favorite hot snacks is little smoked sausages wrapped in sugar-coated bacon. These are simply mind-dulling good, so I always cook a huge batch because they disappear instantly! It's a fantastic combination of dogs and pigs.
Serves: a crowd | Total Time: about an hour till theyβre done
Ingredients
- 1 pound bacon
- 1 to 2 cups brown sugar
- 1 (13 to 14-ounce) package little smoked sausages (beef or pork, you pick)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350Β°.
- Cut 1 strip bacon into 3 equal lengths.
- Place 1 cup brown sugar into a shallow bowl. Dredge 1 piece of bacon into the sugar, coating both sides. Wrap this bacon around 1 little sausage. Use a toothpick to secure the bacon ends. Place onto a parchment-lined baking pan. Repeat until you have wrapped all the bacon around all the sausages. You can use more sugar as you need to.
- Place the little dogs into the oven and cook until the bacon browns and crisps and the sugar is meltingly gooey, about 40 to 45 minutes. Place the bacon-wrapped dogs onto a platter and watch them disappear.
So if you place the little dogs right into the baking pan, cleanup will be monstrous! This is why I recommend using parchment paper. Parchment paper is different than waxed paper. You can use parchment paper when you bake or roast, and it wonβt burn. Waxed paper is not meant for the oven. You can find rolls of parchment paper in the store, next to the aluminum foil. But I recommend that you order parchment sheets online. Theyβre just easier to use one at a time.

There is a deep, instinctual joy in serving a warm, bite-sized appetizer that you know everyone will absolutely devour. Cooking a huge batch of these sticky, sweet-and-savory little sausages is an act of sheer generosityβitβs about providing pure, unadulterated comfort food to the people you care about. Placing a massive platter of these in the center of the room instantly lowers the collective blood pressure, signaling to your guests that it is time to laugh loudly, eat with their hands, and feel completely at home.
Neighborly Grace
- THE PRESENTATION: Mound these glossy, caramelized little dogs high on a large, dark ceramic platter or rustic wooden board so they look incredibly abundant. Leave the wooden toothpicks in them so guests can easily grab them while mingling. Since they are beautifully sticky, make sure to provide plenty of high-quality, dark-colored cocktail napkins.
- THE POUR: A rich, fruit-forward Zinfandel or a robust Bourbon Smash. You need a drink with enough deep fruit flavor and structure to hold its own against the intensely savory smoke of the sausage and the rich, caramelized sugar of the bacon.
- THE VIBE: Lively, incredibly warm, and deeply comforting. This is the ultimate icebreaker appetizer for a bustling holiday party or a high-energy game day gathering, instantly putting a smile on everyone's face.
