Makes: about 3 dozen cookies | Total Time: Twenty minutes till it’s cookie time!
Ingredients
Instructions
- Whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt in a small bowl and set aside.
- Use an electric mixer to combine the butter and sugars until fluffy.
- Stir in the eggs and vanilla extract.
- Stir in 1/3 of the flour. When it is just incorporated, add about 1/3 more. When that’s just mixed in, add the remaining 1/3.
- Now stir in your favorite ingredients.
- Preheat your oven to 375°.
- Use a 2- to 3-inch ice cream scoop to drop the dough onto parchment-lined baking sheets.
- Bake until the cookies are golden and just beginning to brown on the bottom edges, about 10 to 12 minutes depending on the size of your cookies.
Thing to Note:
If you like a richer tasting cookie, use butter. Shortening will make softer cookies. Experiment with both and choose for yourself! If you want them slightly thicker and chewier, refrigerate your dough before baking.

Every kitchen needs one dough it can make without thinking, and this is ours. It is the recipe children learn first — the one that turns a rainy afternoon into a baking party, fills the house with warm butter and vanilla, and makes a borrowed cup of flour the start of a friendship. Piled high on a rustic board at the center of the table, still warm, these cookies gather everyone at once — proof that the simplest things, shared generously, are the ones people remember.
