A Dinner Party, Featuring Recipes from CANVAS AND CUISINE
I absolutely LOVE to entertain... but I think the best fun of all is making the guests work for their supper! I recently hosted a wonderful group of dedicated parents for a wine-paired dinner party at our home in Charlotte, and the energy was just spectacular. You see, the wheels started runnin’ when I realized that everyone wants to be in the kitchen anyway... so why not give them an apron and a glass of Prosecco?
A long dinner table filled with friends and candlelight in Charlotte
We divided our friends into teams and let the cooking begin. This wasn’t just about following a recipe... it was about the Routine of Connection that happens when you’re standing shoulder-to-shoulder. One team was in charge of stacking heirloom tomatoes with panko-crusted goat cheese, while another took to the grill to sear the pork tenderloin to perfection.
Seeing everyone collaborate and laugh over the cutting boards was just the most wonderful thing. It reminds me of the years I spent traveling with my dear friend Susan Fazio... she with her easel and me with my favorite chef’s knife. That is the soul of Canvas and Cuisine —the idea that art and appetite are meant to be shared together.
The Dining Room Setting
There is a specific kind of neighborly grace that happens when you stop being just a guest and start being part of the creation! By the time we sat down to enjoy the fruits of our labor, the atmosphere was completely transformed. When guests help create the meal, they aren't just eating... they are celebrating a memory they built with their own hands.
Friends working together in the kitchen
It was a night of pure neighborly grace, and I can confidently tell you that everyone had a great time... and I know this for a fact because it was me that had the most fun of all! The table was a testament to the fact that when we cook together, we aren't just making food; we are architecting the foundation of a community.
Cooking with Friends
From the first pop of the Prosecco cork to the final slice of the roast, the kitchen became a gallery of movement and laughter. Every guest left with more than just a full stomach; they left with the signature approach of the collaborative host: unhurried, engaged, and truly connected.
