Ingredients
Special Sauce
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- ¼ cup chili sauce
- ¼ cup sour cream
- 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
- 2 tablespoons yellow onion, minced
- 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
- 2 garlic cloves, peeled and minced, about 1 tablespoon
- 2 teaspoon granulated sugar
Caramelized Onions
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon coarse black pepper
Beef Patties and Sandwich
- ½ pound lean ground beef
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 ounces Swiss cheese, grated
- 4 slices marbled rye bread
- 2 tablespoons butter
Instructions
- Whisk together the mayonnaise, chili sauce, sour cream, pickle relish, minced onion, mustard, garlic, and sugar. Season with salt and pepper. Set sauce aside.
- Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil and 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions. Cook until the onions are translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the balsamic vinegar and season with salt and pepper. Cook until the onions are golden and syrupy, about 3 to 5 minutes more. Transfer to a dish.
- Season the ground beef with Worcestershire. Form into 2 thin patties that match the size of the bread.
- Heat 1 more tablespoon olive oil in the skillet. Cook the patties for 2 minutes on one side. Flip and cook for 2 minutes on the second side. Season with salt and pepper. Transfer the patties to a plate.
- Assemble the sandwich by starting with one slice of bread. Slather the bread with sauce. Lay a patty on top of the sauce. Mound onions on top of the patty and layer with cheese. Top with a second slice of bread. Repeat with the second sandwich.
- Melt 2 tablespoons butter in the skillet over medium-high heat. Lay the sandwiches into the melted butter. Cook for 1 minute. Smoosh the sandwich and flip. Cook until the second side is golden, about 2 to 3 minutes. Flip and cook again until the cheese is melted and the bread is golden on both sides, about 2 to 4 minutes more.
- Transfer to a cutting board, cut in half, and dig in!
