Weekend Sangria
Weekend Sangria is a make-ahead pitcher of medium-bodied red wine, brandy, orange liqueur, and seasonal fruit, steeped overnight and finished with sparkling water at the door. The make-ahead is the whole magic — an overnight rest melds the flavors and hands you back your Friday evening. Two rules: keep the sparkling water separate until you serve so it stays lively, and never let it taste sugary. The fruit and wine are the stars.
Sangria is the most forgiving drink a host can make and one of the most rewarding, because it asks to be made in advance. The work happens the night before; the welcome happens on its own, a full pitcher waiting the moment your first guest steps through the door.
Make It the Day Before
Combine the wine, brandy, orange liqueur, orange-vanilla syrup, and fresh juices in a large pitcher, add the sliced citrus and fruit, and refrigerate for at least eight hours, ideally overnight. In that quiet stretch the fruit gives itself to the wine and the sharp edges soften into something rounded and mellow. It is also one less thing to think about when the weekend actually arrives.
Keep the Sparkle Separate
Everything but the bubbles goes in ahead. Hold the chilled sparkling water back and stir it in only just before serving, so the sangria arrives lively rather than tired. Serve over plenty of ice, and make sure every glass gets a spoonful of the wine-soaked fruit — it is the best part, and it should never stay behind in the pitcher.

Method
- In a large glass pitcher, combine wine, brandy, orange liqueur, Orange-Vanilla Simple Syrup, orange juice, and lemon juice.

The Heart of the Table
A pitcher of sangria on the counter is a standing invitation — help yourself, stay a while, no one is keeping track. It is hospitality you can prepare in advance and pour all weekend, the drink that keeps the celebration going without ever keeping you from it.
The Art of the Host
Reach for a large glass pitcher or a beverage dispenser, a long spoon or small ladle for serving up the fruit, and plenty of ice-filled glasses. Keep the sparkling water chilled and separate to the side. For a bigger crowd the recipe simply doubles into a dispenser — set it out, fill the glasses with ice, and let everyone help themselves while you greet people at the door.
Neighborly Grace
- The Presentation: Serve over plenty of ice with a spoonful of the wine-soaked fruit in every glass, finished with a fresh orange wheel and a sprig of mint. A clear pitcher or dispenser shows off the fruit and does half the decorating for you.
- The Vibe: An unhurried weekend afternoon that stretches into evening — the backyard, the long table, the self-serve pitcher that quietly keeps everyone lingering.
- The Flourish: Let the season steer it. Add blackberries and a sprig of rosemary for a Blackberry Sangria, trade the apples for peaches and use peach syrup for a Peach Summer Sangria, stir in fresh cranberries with blood orange–sage syrup for a Cranberry Holiday Sangria, or build a White Weekend Sangria on Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio with green grapes, peaches, and citrus.
