Orange Poppy Seed Scones

Ingredients
Scone Dry Ingredients
- 1 ¼ cups unbleached all-purpose flour
- 1 cup pastry flour
- ¼ cup natural cane sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- Zest of 1 medium orange, about 2 teaspoons
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 2 teaspoons poppy seeds
Butter and Half-and-Half
- ½ cup unsalted butter, chilled, cut into small pieces, 1 stick
- 1 cup half-and-half, plus more for the tops
Glaze
- 1 cup confectioners' sugar
- Juice of 1 medium orange, about ¼ cup
- 1 teaspoon poppy seeds
Instructions
Shape the dough
- Preheat the oven to 375°.
- Place the flours into the bowl of a food processor.
- Add the cane sugar, baking powder, orange zest, salt and 2 teaspoons poppy seeds.
- Pulse to combine.
- Add the butter to the bowl and pulse several times to form coarse crumbs.
- Add the half-and-half and pulse until the dough comes together.
- Transfer the dough onto a floured board.
- Knead the dough a couple of times until it just comes together. It will be sticky! Flour a rolling pin and your work surface.
- Roll the dough into a 9 x 6-inch rectangle.
- Cut the dough into 8 scones. Use a spatula to transfer the scones to a parchment lined baking sheet.
Bake and cool
- Brush the tops with additional half and half.
- Bake until the tops are golden, about 20 to 25 minutes.
- Transfer the scones to a rack to cool.
Glaze
- Whisk together the confectioners' sugar with orange juice.
- Brush the scones with this glaze.
- Sprinkle with poppy seeds.
