ELIXIRS & LIBATIONS

English Christmas Eggnog Punch

The Strategy:

Whisk the eggnog, heavy cream, whole milk, Vanilla Bean Simple Syrup, vanilla extract, nutmeg, cinnamon and sea salt until smooth, then refrigerate for at least four hours, or overnight, so the flavors meld. Pour it into a crystal punch bowl just before serving and float cinnamon sticks and candied orange peel on top. Serve in punch cups alongside bourbon and dark rum, so each guest can add a spirit or not.

Eggnog is the taste of the season for a great many people, and a punch bowl of it at the center of a room does something a bottle passed around never quite manages. It gathers everyone to one spot — to ladle, to garnish, to linger — which is the whole reason to make it.

Better Overnight

Whisk the eggnog, cream, and milk together with vanilla syrup, vanilla extract, freshly grated nutmeg, cinnamon, and a pinch of sea salt until smooth, then refrigerate for at least four hours, ideally overnight. The rest is what turns it from good to memorable, smoothing the spices and letting the vanilla come forward. Pour it into a chilled crystal bowl only at serving time.

Keep the Bowl Family-Friendly

The gracious move is to leave the spirits out of the bowl entirely. A punch this beautiful should be something the children and the non-drinkers can enjoy right alongside everyone else, so the bourbon and dark rum go on a small tray to the side, ready for anyone who wants to lace their own cup. No one is left holding an empty glass.

Notes

The Holiday Spirits Bar
Rather than adding alcohol to the entire bowl, invite guests to customize each serving.
Offer:
โ€ข 1ยฝ ounces Bourbon for a rich, caramel finish
โ€ข 1ยฝ ounces Dark Rum for warm molasses and spice notes
Finish each cup with freshly grated nutmeg and a cinnamon stick.
This allows children and guests who prefer a nonalcoholic beverage to enjoy the same beautiful punch.
Jorj's Tip
Make the punch base the day before your party. Like many holiday recipes, the flavors become smoother and more balanced after resting overnight. Wait until serving time to pour it into your punch bowl, then garnish with freshly grated nutmeg for the most inviting aroma.
For an elegant presentation, chill the punch bowl before filling it and place it on a silver tray surrounded by evergreen boughs, pinecones, and candlelight.
Hosting a Crowd
For 20 guests, prepare:
โ€ข 16 cups eggnog
โ€ข 4 cups heavy cream
โ€ข 2 cups whole milk
โ€ข ยฝ cup Vanilla Bean Simple Syrup
โ€ข 4 teaspoons vanilla
โ€ข 2 teaspoons freshly grated nutmeg
โ€ข 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Offer two bottles each of bourbon and dark rum on the side, along with a bowl of freshly grated nutmeg, cinnamon sticks, and candied orange peel so guests can personalize their drinks.

The Heart of the Table

Some traditions are worth the ceremony. A crystal bowl of eggnog on a silver tray, wreathed in evergreen and candlelight, is not just a drink but a centerpiece — the warm, spiced heart of the room around which the whole evening quietly organizes itself.

The Art of the Host

You will want a large whisk and pitcher for mixing, a crystal punch bowl chilled ahead of time, and a stack of punch cups, along with a fine grater kept close for fresh nutmeg. Set the bowl on a silver tray surrounded by evergreen boughs, pinecones, and candlelight, with the spirits and a bowl of garnishes arranged just to the side.

Neighborly Grace

  • The Presentation: Serve chilled in punch cups, with cinnamon sticks and curls of candied orange peel floating on the bowl and a fresh grating of nutmeg over each cup — that final grate is as much about the aroma as the flavor. A chilled bowl on a silver tray keeps it cold and looking its best.
  • The Vibe: A Christmas tree-trimming supper — ornaments in boxes, carols low on the stereo, evergreen and candlelight, and the season's first warm, nostalgic toast before the lights go on.
  • The Flourish: Set out a Holiday Spirits Bar — about an ounce and a half of bourbon for a rich caramel finish or dark aged rum for warm molasses and spice, stirred into a cup and topped with fresh nutmeg and a cinnamon stick. For a crowd, scale the base and offer two bottles each of bourbon and rum beside bowls of nutmeg, cinnamon sticks, and candied orange peel.
