Hurricane Brew
Hurricane Brew is a festive rum punch of orange, pineapple, and passion fruit with two styles of rum, finished with lemon-lime soda — made for backyard cookouts, fireworks, and long summer afternoons. It is one of those punches that genuinely improves overnight, so mix the whole base, rum included, the day before, and stir in the sparkling soda only at serving so it reaches the glass bright and lively.
A good punch is the most generous thing on a summer table — one big, beautiful vessel that pours a whole party without you lifting a shaker. This one is built for a crowd and a hot afternoon, tropical and easy and impossible to make just a little of.
Mix It the Day Before
Combine the citrus and passion fruit juices, the blood orange syrup, and both rums in a large pitcher or dispenser, and refrigerate overnight. The rest is not just convenience — a night in the cold lets the flavors deepen and marry into something rounder than the sum of its parts. This is a cocktail that actually rewards making it ahead.
Two Rums, One Punch
The double pour of rum is what gives the brew its backbone: dark rum brings molasses depth and color, light rum keeps it bright and drinkable. Leave the lemon-lime soda out until the very end, then stir it in just before serving and pour over plenty of ice. Hold a little extra soda in reserve to top the vessel as the afternoon goes on, so the punch never turns flat.

The Heart of the Table
There is a reason the punch bowl has anchored gatherings for centuries — it says come in, stay awhile, help yourself to another glass. Hurricane Brew is that welcome in its summer form, a big bright pour that keeps a backyard full and happy long after the burgers are gone.
The Art of the Host
Serve from a large glass beverage dispenser with a small ladle and a stack of tall glasses on plenty of ice, and set the sparkling soda chilled and separate to the side. For a real crowd, surround the dispenser with galvanized tubs of ice, garnish it generously with citrus and fruit, and keep extra soda close to refresh the punch without watering it down.
Neighborly Grace
- The Presentation: Serve over ice in tall glasses, garnished with orange slices, lime wheels, a pineapple wedge, a cherry, and fresh mint. Float the same fruit across the top of the dispenser so the whole vessel looks like the centerpiece it is.
- The Vibe: A backyard cookout that runs from afternoon into fireworks — music, lawn chairs, a long golden evening, and a drink built to last the whole of it.
- The Flourish: Pour a family-friendly Sparkling Citrus Punch alongside it — leave out the rum, bump the pineapple juice, add an extra measure of soda, and garnish with floating oranges, strawberries, blueberries, and mint, so every age has a glass in hand. For a big party, scale the base and serve from a dispenser ringed with galvanized tubs of ice.
