This vibrant chutney, slowly simmered to perfection, is an ideal make-ahead delight, allowing its nuanced flavors to deepen beautifully for effortless entertaining. It exquisitely marries the peak-season sweetness of purply-red heirloom tomatoes and ripe peaches with a gentle warmth from poblano and cherry peppers, all harmonized by brown sugar and aromatic Chinese five spice. Offer this incredibly complex, sweet-and-savory creation alongside a succulent roasted pork or as an elegant companion to a simple cheese board, transforming any spread into a gourmet experience.
Makes: about 3 cups | Total Time: 30 minutes till it’s ready
Ingredients
Veggies and Fruits
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 poblano pepper, seeded and finely diced, about ½ cup
- 2 to 3 medium-hot cherry peppers, seeded and finely diced, about ½ cup
- ½ medium red onion, peeled and finely diced, about ½ cup
- 6 medium tomatoes, peeled and diced, about 6 cups
- 6 ripe peaches, peeled and diced, about 6 cups
Chutney Seasonings
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon Chinese five spice
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- ½ teaspoon coarse black pepper
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat.
- Add the peppers and onion and cook until just soft, about 2 to 3 minutes.
- Stir in the tomatoes and peaches.
- Stir in the brown sugar.
- Bring everything to a boil and then reduce the heat to medium-low.
- Season with Chinese five spice, salt, and pepper.
- Simmer until the peaches just begin to break apart and the chutney thickens, about 20 to 25 minutes. The longer you simmer, the thicker the chutney!
- Cool to room temperature and then store in an airtight container for up to 3 weeks in the fridge.
To peel the tomatoes and peaches, use a sharp knife to cut slits in the top. Place into boiling water for a minute or two. Remove and cool slightly. The peel will come off easily from the slits.

There is a special kind of magic in preserving the peak flavors of late summer. When you take the time to slowly simmer beautiful, ripe produce into a complex, sweet-and-savory chutney, you are capturing a moment in time to share later. Serving a jar of homemade chutney alongside a beautifully curated cheese board is a profoundly welcoming gesture. It encourages guests to linger, assemble their perfect bite, and engage in the kind of slow, meaningful conversation that only happens when people feel entirely cared for.
Neighborly Grace
- THE PRESENTATION: Serve the chutney in a beautiful, small crystal bowl or a clear, vintage-style glass jar to show off the vibrant red-orange color. Surround it with a sprawling array of sharp, aged white cheddar, creamy brie, rustic seeded crackers, and perhaps some thinly sliced prosciutto. Provide a small silver spoon for easy serving.
- THE POUR: A dry, structured rosé or a light, fruity Beaujolais. You want a wine that is refreshing enough to cut through the rich cheeses but has enough fruit character to complement the sweet peaches and warm Chinese five spice in the chutney.
- THE VIBE: Relaxed, welcoming, and effortlessly luxurious. This is the perfect centerpiece for a late-summer sunset gathering on the porch, where the air is starting to cool and the conversation is easy and flowing.
