Calzones
Now that we can make flatbreads and pizza, calzones are the perfect next step for creative cooking with your homemade dough. Basically in the shape of a semicircle with the filling folded inside, these savory pockets are baked until golden brown and brushed with olive oil. Best of all, they can be customized with any toppings you like and served warm with extra sauce on the side for dunking!
Makes: 4 calzones | Total Time: 30 minutes ‘til it’s ready
Ingredients
- pizza dough (see recipe)
- pizza sauce (see recipe)
- 4 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded, about 1 cup
- 1 medium onion, peeled and finely diced, about 1 cup
- 1 medium green bell pepper, seeded and deveined, finely diced, about 1 cup
- 8 ounces sliced pepperoni, about 1 cup
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°.
- Divide the pizza dough into four portions and roll each part into a round circle.
- Spread pizza sauce over half of each circle.
- Top the sauce with cheese, veggies, and pepperoni.
- Fold the dough over the filling and crimp the edges together using the tines of a fork.
- Brush with olive oil and transfer to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Use a knife to cut three small slits into each calzone. This will allow the steam to escape as it bakes.
- Bake until golden brown, about 15 to 20 minutes.
- Serve warm with extra pizza sauce on the side for dunking.
